Bokkielicious – Natural Soap Bar – Turmeric – 120g Bar

Turmeric is a rhizome — a root, essentially — dried and ground into the powder that’s likely already in a spice tin somewhere in the kitchen. In skin care it’s valued for curcumin, the compound responsible for both its colour and its long-documented antioxidant activity, and it’s been used for generations to calm skin that’s reddened or reactive, and to help even out a complexion that’s looking dull or uneven. It isn’t working alone, though.

Goat milk sits alongside it as the bar’s second lead ingredient, worked in fresh rather than as a powder. Its fatty acid profile sits close to what skin already produces, so it tends to absorb rather than sit on the surface, and the natural lactic acid it carries gently loosens dead skin cells with use — a mild, ongoing exfoliation rather than anything abrasive. Between turmeric and goat milk, that’s most of what the bar is actually trying to do for the skin; the rest of the recipe exists to get them there.

Castor oil is what builds the lather, drawing moisture to the surface and helping the bar foam fuller than a plain base would manage on its own. Coconut oil does the cleansing itself, lifting off the everyday dirt and oil that plain water won’t shift — and once that cleansing is done, shea butter and olive oil pick up where it leaves off. Shea butter is rich in fatty acids that help reinforce the skin’s own barrier, which is part of why the bar doesn’t leave skin feeling stripped afterwards; olive oil softens the texture of the bar itself, so it glides rather than drags.

None of that holds together as an actual bar without two more practical additions. Sodium lactate is a hardening agent, keeping the bar firm in the shower rather than turning soft and mushy between washes. Sodium hydroxide is what turns the oils into soap in the first place — every bar soap is made this way, and once saponification is complete, none of it remains in the finished bar as lye.

The result works well across most skin types, including dry and sensitive skin. Lather it directly in the hands or against a damp cloth, and keep it on a draining dish between washes so it isn’t sitting in water. The colour fades a little with every wash, same as it would off a wooden spoon — it’s just doing something different this time.
