Sodium percarbonate carries the cleaning work: in water it releases oxygen, and that’s what breaks down baked-on starch and grease rather than simply rinsing past it. Washing soda — sodium carbonate — softens the water it’s working in, which means the percarbonate spends its energy on food rather than mineral hardness, and contributes its own grease-cutting alkalinity besides. The fast dissolve comes from citric acid, and the same fizzing reaction with the carbonates also discourages limescale from forming inside the machine, which is part of why the glasses come out clear. Bicarbonate of soda sits underneath all of it as a gentler, buffering presence. Lemon extract is there only for scent, and it’s real. A natural, dish-safe binder holds the tablet’s shape until water reaches it.

One tablet covers a full cycle, however loaded the rack is — no measuring, no adjusting for a bigger load, just the tablet in before the door shuts.
