For the dishwasher that runs without a second thought.

The tablet drops in, the door clicks shut, and within moments the fizzing starts — sodium percarbonate releasing oxygen into the water, working through the sauce baked onto a pan and the rice stuck to the bottom of a pot. Washing soda carries that further by softening the water itself, so none of it is lost to mineral build-up before it even reaches the dishes, and citric acid is behind the quick start. What’s left by the end is only a trace of real lemon. For a kitchen running the dishwasher most days, sixty tablets is enough to stop thinking about resupply for a good while — not a box outgrown in a fortnight, not one gathering dust either.

A dishwasher tablet only needs to manage a few things well: dissolve quickly, lift whatever’s stuck to the plate, and leave glass clear rather than clouded. The Less Bad Dishwasher Tablet is built from six ingredients, and each one is there because it does something specific in the wash, not because the label needed filling.

At the centre of it is sodium percarbonate, which breaks down on contact with water and releases oxygen — the reaction responsible for lifting baked-on food rather than just rinsing around it. Sodium carbonate, or washing soda, does two things at once: it softens the water so the percarbonate isn’t spent fighting hardness first, and its own alkalinity helps loosen fat directly. The fizz that gets the tablet moving comes from citric acid, and the same reaction with the carbonates helps keep limescale from forming inside the machine — part of why glasses come out clear instead of streaked. Bicarbonate of soda adds a milder, buffering layer to the cleaning action. Lemon extract is there purely for scent, real rather than synthetic. A natural, dish-safe binder holds everything together as a tablet until water reaches it, then lets go.

One tablet is enough for a full cycle regardless of load size — no measuring, no topping up, just the tablet into the dispenser before the cycle starts. Sixty suits a kitchen where the dishwasher runs most days: enough to settle into without watching the count, and without reordering every few weeks.
